Hepatitis C infections almost tripled over past 5-years

first_imgBy Garth A. RoseAccording to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, over just five years, the number of reported new hepatitis C virus infections has nearly tripled, reaching a 15-year high, according to new preliminary surveillance data.Because hepatitis C has few symptoms, nearly half of people living with the virus don’t know they are infected and most new infections go undiagnosed. Further, limited surveillance resources have led to underreporting, meaning the annual number of hepatitis C virus cases reported to CDC (850 cases in 2010 and 2,436 cases in 2015) does not reflect the true scale of the epidemic. CDC estimates about 34,000 new hepatitis C infections actually occurred in the U.S. in 2015.The Center says Hepatitis C kills more Americans than any other infectious disease reported It. The recently released data indicate that nearly 20,000 Americans died from hepatitis C-related causes in 2015, The majority of deaths were people ages 55 and older.“By testing, curing, and preventing hepatitis C, we can protect generations of Americans from needless suffering and death,” said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. “We must reach the hardest-hit communities with a range of prevention and treatment services that can diagnose people with hepatitis C and link them to treatment. This wide range of services can also prevent the misuse of prescription drugs and ultimately stop drug use –which can also prevent others from getting hepatitis C in the first place.”New hepatitis C virus infections are increasing most rapidly among young people, with the highest overall number of new infections among 20- to 29-year-olds. This is primarily a result of increasing injection drug use associated with America’s growing opioid epidemic. However, the majority (three-quarters) of the 3.5 million Americans already living with hepatitis C are people born from 1945 to 1965. The so-called Baby-boomers are six times more likely to be infected with hepatitis C than those in other age groups and are at much greater risk of death from the virus.Recent CDC studies also indicate hepatitis C virus infections are growing among women of childbearing age, putting the youngest generation of Americans at risk. Hepatitis C treatment not only cures the vast majority of people living with the virus but also prevents transmission to their partners and children. The CDC cautions comprehensive approaches are needed to combat the dual epidemics of opioid addiction and injection-related infectious diseases. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has implemented five specific strategies to fight the opioid epidemic and save lives and reduce the impact of injection-related infectious diseases. These strategies are:improving access to treatment and recovery services;promoting the use of overdose-reversing drugs:strengthening our understanding of the opioid epidemic through better public health surveillance:providing support for cutting-edge research on pain and addiction: and advancing better practices for pain management.Comprehensive syringe service programs (SSPs) are one of many tools communities can use to prevent hepatitis and other injection-related infectious diseases. These programs also help link people to treatments to stop drug use, test for infectious diseases that can spread to others, and medical care. However, a recent CDC analyses indicate 80 percent of young people with hepatitis C live over 10 miles from an SSP. Another study finds only a few states have laws that support full access to both comprehensive SSPs and hepatitis C-related treatment and preventive services for people who inject drugs. While new medicines can now cure hepatitis C virus infections in as little as two to three months, many people in need of treatment are not able to get it. HHS recently released the National Viral Hepatitis Action Plan, 2017-2020 that sets goals for improving prevention, care, and treatment of viral hepatitis and puts the nation on a course toward eliminating new hepatitis infections. “Stopping hepatitis C will eliminate an enormous disease and economic burden for all Americans,” said Dr. John Ward, director of CDC’s Division of Viral Hepatitis. “We have a cure for this disease and the tools to prevent new infections. Now we need a substantial, focused, and concerted national effort to implement the National Viral Hepatitis Action Plan and make effective prevention tools and curative treatment available to Americans in needlast_img read more

Holder urges Windies to lift their game against England

first_imgWest Indies captain Jason Holder has labelled the upcoming England Test tour as a “big series.” He is hoping his side can replicate the fight they showed on their fierce rivals’ last tour of the Caribbean four years ago when they drew the three-match series.England touched down I Barbados on January 11 for the three-Test rubber which bowls off at Kensington Oval on January 23. Ironically, the last time the two teams met at the venue in the final Test of the 2015 tour, the Windies pulled off a stunning five-wicket victory inside three days to force a 1-1 series stalemate.Big series in the contest of WI cricket“An England series is a big series in the context of West Indies cricket,” Holder told reporters here Friday. The last time they were here it was a pretty well-fought series. [We] came out with a draw in the end and there were big crowds, massive support both from England and the Caribbean so I expect something similar this year and hopefully we can lift the trophy.”Poor historyHistory won’t be on the Windies side, however. In their last 12 Tests against England at home, they have won just two, while losing four and drawing six. In the last two decades, West Indies have won just two series against England, leaving the odds in the upcoming series stacked firmly in the visitors’ favor.Despite this, Holder believes the series presents the ideal chance for the Windies to match their talents against the world number two Test side. “It’s obviously a wonderful opportunity to play against one of the top teams in the world,” the all-rounder pointed out.“They’re just coming off a really good series win against Sri Lanka. We obviously played Sri Lanka last home series and we had a pretty good tour there. I’m really looking forward to the challenge. England is obviously one of the better teams in Test cricket around the world and it would be really good to beat them on our home tour.”West Indies will need a dramatic turnaround in form if they are to upset England. Last year, they won three of nine Tests while losing five. In their last two away tours, their whitewashed 2-0 by India and Bangladesh respectively.Holder pointed out that while there had been some excellent individual performances over the last year, the time had come for the Windies to play consistently as a team unit. The tour also comprises five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals and runs until March 10.last_img read more

SEC Charges Investment Advisor for Running Ponzi Scheme Targeting Haitian Community

first_imgNEW YORK – Last week, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed charges against a New York investment advisor for operating a multimillion-dollar investment club that was actually a fraudulent Ponzi scheme targeting members of the local Haitian community as well as his own family and friends.Among Friends Investment GroupThe SEC’s complaint alleges that Ruless Pierre ran an investment club called the Amongst Friends Investment Group that operated as a fraudulent Ponzi scheme. From at least March 2017, Pierre allegedly raised over $2 million from at least 100 investors, predominately Haitian New Yorkers, who purchased high-yield promissory notes through Amongst Friends.  As alleged, Pierre induced investors by promising unrealistically high rates of return of at least 20 percent every 60 days.In reality, the complaint alleges that Pierre incurred heavy losses trading securities and concealed them by using new investor funds to pay older investors and issuing false account statements showing investment gains. Pierre allegedly further financed the fraud by using money that he embezzled from a former employer to make interest payments to investors. The SEC’s complaint also alleges that Pierre fraudulently raised at least $375,000 from more than 15 investors related to a scheme involving the sale of partnership interests in a fast food chain. In or about November 2018, Pierre began to sell partnership interests in a fast food franchise, with agreements that falsely guaranteed monthly returns of 10 percent (60 percent per year) plus quarterly profit sharing. As alleged, at the time he sold these interests, Pierre knew that the franchise could not provide sufficient profits to pay investors the promised returns.Foundations of lies and deceit“We allege that Pierre’s Amongst Friends investment opportunity that targeted members of Pierre’s local Haitian community was built on a foundation of lies and deceit,” said Marc P. Berger, Director of the SEC’s New York Regional Office. “Investors should be wary of investments promising rates of return that seem too good to be true, and are encouraged to ask questions and check on their investment professional’s background at http://www.Investor.gov.”The SEC’s complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, charges Pierre with violating the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws. The complaint also names R. Pierre Consulting Group LLC as a relief defendant. In a parallel action, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York today announced criminal charges against Pierre.last_img read more
