IN PRAISE OF KEITH DUGGAN

first_imgTHE excellent weekend article by Irish Times journalist Keith Duggan gave a proper perspective to Donegal’s clash with Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final at Croke Park.It also forensically disemboweled every single proclamation of every single RTE TV pundit. Here’s an excellent follow-up letter in today’s Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/letters/2011/0907/1224303634807.htmlIN PRAISE OF KEITH DUGGAN was last modified: September 7th, 2011 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:keith dugganlast_img read more

TOURISM BOOST FOR DONEGAL AS DERRY TO HOST FLEADH 2013

first_imgDONEGAL hoteliers are celebrating today after Derry won its bid to host the All-Ireland Fleadh in 2013.Members of the central executive of traditional Irish music body Comhaltas met in Dublin to decide the venue – and voted for Derry ahead of Sligo. The festival attracts up to 300,000 visitors and is worth about €40m to the host venue. Comhaltas promotes traditional Irish music and culture around the world.Derry, which will be UK City of Culture 2013, was a late confirmation on the shortlist after the Ulster Council of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann reversed its decision not to support the bid.It had withdrawn its backing after two bombs exploded in the city last week. The decision, taken by 30 executive members in a secret ballot, was greeted by cheering at the Comhaltas headquarters in south county Dublin. First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness have welcomed the decision.Mr Robinson said: “This is a vote of confidence in Derry and it will generate significant cultural and economic benefit to the city and surrounding areas.”Mr McGuinness said: “There have been one or two hurdles along the way but that is behind us and now is the time for everyone to work together to ensure that this is a fleadh which will live long in the memory.”With so few hotel beds in Derry, it will lead to a booming trade especially for Inishowen, Letterkenny and surrounding accommodation providers. TOURISM BOOST FOR DONEGAL AS DERRY TO HOST FLEADH 2013 was last modified: January 28th, 2012 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegal hotelslast_img read more

McGONAGLE THE HERO AS BUNCRANA ARE CROWNED COUNTY MINOR CHAMPIONS

first_imgBUNCRANA minors are county championship winners after a hard-fought victory over St Eunan’s at MacCumhaill Park this evening. There was a good crowd in attendance for the floodlit match in Ballybofey to see two of the best U-18 sides in the county go head-to-head in a gripping encounter which was only decided in extra-time.Three points from Buncrana’s Man of the Match Caolan McGonagle in extra time – two of them from 45s – saw them to victory in a pulsating match. Buncrana had led by four points to no score well into the first half and went in at the break ahead 0-04 to 0-02 in a very tactical game, Conor McEniff and Conor O’Donnell hitting the points for the Letterkenny side late on to reduce the deficit.John Campbell (2), Darach O’Connor and Caolan McGonagle had given Buncrana the four point advantage.McEniff hit three more points in the second half to edge St Eunan’s into a 0-08 to 0-06 lead.Buncrana reduced the deficit to a single point when Darrach O’Connor converted a free and it made 0-08 to 0-07. And then in injury time Caolan McGonagle hit another free over to level the match at eight points each.In extra time, St Eunan’s looked sharper and Brian McGeehin hit a point to edge them into the lead once more.Jordan O’Dowd had the chance to extend the lead but his thunderbolt rattled off the crossbar. Then Buncrana dug deep again and levelled the match once more with a monster point from 45 yards from McGonagle to leave it square again at the break. Two minutes in and McGonagle did it again – another scorching point from a 45 – to give Buncrana the lead. St Eunan’s missed a free and a chance to level; and McGonagle scored again, this time from closer in.The Letterkenny lads fought on, David Tyrell pointing – but Buncrana held on to and scored again win 0-12 to 0-10.Well done to both sides.Earlier Noamh Columba lifted the Division 2 championship with a good win over Na Rossa. Bochy rumor mill: Giants to interview ex-A’s manager Geren as replacement

first_imgOn the surface, a report that former A’s manager and current Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren is a candidate to replace Bruce Bochy in San Francisco may not seem to make sense.Could the Giants really replace the most successful manager in their history with the only A’s manager over the past 33 years who didn’t lead Oakland to the postseason or even finish with a winning season? However, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported Wednesday that Geren, who worked with Giants President of Baseball …last_img read more

BCCI misleading people on several key issues: Lodha Panel

first_imgNew Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) Taking strong exception to BCCI “misleading” everyone on key issues such as disbursement of large amount of funds to state associations, the Supreme Court-appointed Justice RM Lodha Panel today said it was unfortunate that their directions have been “misinterpreted”. On behalf of the panel, secretary Gopal Shankarnarayan emailed board president Anurag Thakur, secretary Ajay Shirke, treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhry and CEO Rahul Johri, highlighting a number of statements that has been attributed to the key functionaries of Indias richest sporting body. The email states: “It is unfortunate that the directions/contents of the e-mail have been misinterpreted, as is evident from the press reports to state that the present India-New Zealand series is at stake.” The e-mail clearly mentioned once again that banks have not been instructed to freeze BCCI accounts. “The Supreme Court Committee has not frozen the bank accounts of BCCI. Nor has it objected to the banking operations/payments relating to routine administration and conduct of cricket matches/tournaments/activities. “This has been clarified in express terms to the banks concerned, so that cricket and the public are not made to pay for the actions of the BCCI governors.” The e-mail clarified the exact objection of the panel. “What was objected to was the decisions said to have been taken at the Emergent Working Committee meeting of BCCI on 30.9.2016, to disburse large funds to the various Member Associations under the guise of increasing the annual infrastructure subsidy and to divide the proceeds of the Champions League compensation. We understand that these may run into figures of more than Rs 500 crore. Such decisions were neither routine nor emergent.” The e-mail mentioned some of the press statements made by BCCI President Anurag Thakur regarding a forced choice between conducting IPL or playing Champions Trophy in England due to less than 15-day gap. “The Committee is also surprised at the Press Statement attributed to the President of BCCI that if the recommendations of the Committee are implemented, BCCI will have to either abandon the plans to host the 10th edition of the IPL or pull the Indian Team out of the Champions Trophy to be held in England in June 2017. The out-of-context statement by the President is misleading. “While dealing with IPL, the report had merely suggested that while drawing up the cricket calendar for a year, a gap of 15 days may be provided after a strenuous IPL season before the commencement of events in the National Calendar, to ensure that a cramped cricketing year does not take a toll on the cricketers body and longevity of their career. This does not in any way prevent some flexibility where the calendar has already been declared for 2017 when the Champions Trophy has already been scheduled.” The panel instructed the BCCI to submit all minutes of last SGM/EGM by tomorrow morning. I would pick Bhuvneshwar over Shami: Sachin Tendulkar ahead of India vs West Indies clash

first_imgCricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday picked pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar over fellow speedster Mohammed Shami, who took a sensational last over hat-trick against Afghanistan, when an unbeaten India take on West Indies in their World Cup game at Manchester Thursday. The Master Blaster picked ‘Bhuvi’, as pacer is commonly known, for his sheer ability to trouble swashbuckling West Indies batsman Chris Gayle.”It’s a great news for India that Bhuvneshwar Kumar is fit. I have seen his body language which showed that he is really confident,” Tendulkar told Star Sports.Kumar (29) had sustained an injury against Pakistan and missed the game against Afghanistan, which India won by 11 runs on June 22.Shami (29), who was drafted in the team in place of Kumar, took a hat-trick in the 50th over of Afghanistan’s innings, becoming just the second Indian, after pacer Chetan Sharma, to achieve the feat in a World Cup match.”For the upcoming match between India and West Indies, if I had to choose between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami, I would definitely pick Bhuvneshwar Kumar.”The only reason being, Bhuvneshwar Kumar can bowl to Chris Gayle at the outer angle and that is what makes Chris Gayle uncomfortable.”I still remember how uncomfortable Chris Gayle was when Bhuvneshwar Kumar was bowling at him in the last Test I played,” added Tendulkar, who holds numerous records to his name. The 46-year-old batting legend played his last of 200th Test, a world record, at Mumbai in 2013.”I know it will be a little unfortunate for Mohammed Shami but I believe for this game, Bhuvneshwar Kumar should be picked,” Tendulkar signed off.advertisementIndia, unbeaten in the World Cup till now, will take on an ousted-yet-dangerous West Indies in the sixth league phase encounter of the showpiece event.last_img read more
