Guelph men drive to Houston to sister forced from home by flooding

first_imgTwo Ontario men are on their way to Houston to help a family member who has been forced from her home by flooding in the hurricane-battered city.Bill Hamilton and Pat Quirk left Guelph, Ont., on Monday night after buying an extreme terrain vehicle capable of driving and floating on water, and are on their way to Quirk’s sister. The pair plan to pick up Quirk’s sister from the hotel where she has taken refuge, check on her home, and work out a plan to find her a safe place to stay.Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Gulf Coast on Friday night as a Category 4 storm and moved northeast along the Texas coast over Houston. The storm has dumped more than 76 centimetres of rain in parts of Texas and authorities have rescued thousands of people left stranded by the storm.Quirk’s 47-year-old sister, who has lived in Houston for a year, was initially stuck in her Houston home, where the ground floor had flooded, Hamilton said. She was helped from her home by a passing motorist and taken to a hotel, but staff have warned guests that the building will likely lose power soon, Hamilton said.Quirk’s sister sent her brother pictures of the hurricane’s aftermath early Monday, Hamilton said. Those photos alarmed Quirk and made the 52-year-old decide to go to the city to help his sister, Hamilton said. When Quirk called Hamilton to tell him of his plan, Hamilton, a 47-year-old landscaper, said he wanted to help out.“It kind of hit close to home with his sister being there, so I thought I’d give (him) a hand,” Hamilton said in a phone interview as he and Quirk made their way to Houston in a pickup truck.By early Tuesday afternoon, Hamilton said he and his friend were driving through Arkansas, and expected to be in Houston late Tuesday.“We’re in contact with (Pat’s) sister now and trying to make a plan as to what part of the city we head for first,” Hamilton said. With numerous streets in and around Houston flooded, Hamilton and Quirk decided to head to the city well prepared for the conditions.Quirk, a retired banker, bought a $25,000 extreme-terrain vehicle from a snowmobile dealership south of Guelph just for the trip, Hamilton said.“It’ll go pretty much anywhere,” said Hamilton, noting that the vehicle can get through mud, rocky terrain, or even across a lake. While the pair are heading for Quirk’s sister, Hamilton said they’ll try to help others who need a hand if they can.“I’m thinking we’ll probably be home by the weekend, but who knows?” Hamilton said.On Tuesday, a pair of 70-year-old reservoir dams that protect downtown Houston and a levee in a suburban subdivision began overflowing, adding to the rising floodwaters from Harvey that have crippled the area after five consecutive days of rain that set a new U.S. record for rainfall for a tropical system.Forecasters expect the storm to linger over the Gulf before heading back inland east of Houston sometime Wednesday. The system will then head north and lose its tropical strength.— with files from the Associated Press.last_img read more

Hudson Bay communities hold first meeting to talk climate development

first_imgMONTREAL – The 27 communities that ring Hudson Bay are scheduled to meet Tuesday for the first time to talk about climate change, environmental protection and the impact of development in their vast and complex region.“It’s always been the Arctic region that falls through the cracks,” said Joel Heath, a scientist with the Arctic Eider Society, which is helping organize the inaugural Hudson Bay Summit.Responsibility for Hudson Bay and its shorelines is divided between Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and Nunavut, as well as the federal government. There are also at least five land claims that cover the region, all of which have overlapping agreements. The communities are also divided by the difficulty of travelling between them. The group will meet in Montreal because it’s easier to get there than any of the towns or hamlets along the coast.“In order for people from west Hudson Bay to get to a community in east Hudson Bay, we’re talking three days of travel,” Heath said. That makes it tough to get together on issues that concern everyone around the world’s second-largest bay. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t common problems, said Heath. The bay and its shoreline face development pressures from three major industrial development plans.Quebec’s Plan Nord, Ontario’s Ring of Fire and Manitoba’s Arctic Bridge would all increase mineral, energy, tourism and transportation impacts. Those proposals come on top of changes already underway.Vast hydro reservoirs in Quebec are storing freshwater that used to pour into the bay in spring and releasing it instead in the winter to generate power for southern cities. Heath has found a layer of freshwater 25 metres deep all along Hudson Bay’s eastern coast.Climate change is altering the region’s sea ice, used by everyone and everything from polar bears to community members trying to hunt and travel safely.Heath said delegates at the conference will talk about a connected network of protected areas, as Canada strives to meet its goal of conserving 17 per cent of its land and inland waters as well as 10 per cent of its oceans by 2020.Delegates will also talk about restoring damaged coastlines and implementing locally based environmental monitoring that can be shared between communities.Heath said communities also want future development to be assessed in the context of overall impacts.“It was clear that environmental assessment was being done piecemeal for some of those (previous) projects. There needs to be co-ordination and some form of working together to overcome those barriers.”Heath said the communities hope to form a consortium that can meet at least regionally on a regular basis. The jigsaw of jurisdictions that look after the enormous area have to start working together, Heath said.“Those lines aren’t actually out there that people create. The animals and the water don’t care.”— By Bob Weber in Edmonton. Follow him on Twitter at @row1960last_img read more

Malaysia Airlines could be sold or shut down PM

first_imgKuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airlines may be sold or shut down, Malaysia’s leader said Tuesday, the latest bad news for a carrier that has been in crisis since suffering the loss of two planes. The 71-year-old airline has been on the ropes since 2014 when Flight MH370 disappeared and MH17 was shot down by a Russian-made missile over war-torn Ukraine. With the carrier teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, sovereign wealth fund Khazanah stepped in to take it over several years ago and major reforms were instituted, including cutting thousands of staff. Also Read – How a psychopath killer hid behind the mask of a devout laity! But it has continued to fare poorly and its performance was blamed in large part for a set of poor financial results released by Khazanah last week. Responding to questions about the airline’s future, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told reporters in parliament: “I think it is a very serious matter, to shut down the national airline. “We will nevertheless be studying and investigating as to whether we should shut it down or we should sell it off or we should refinance it.” Also Read – Encounter under way in Pulwama, militant killed Official news agency Bernama reported that Khazanah last week posted a pre-tax loss of 6.3 billion ringgit (USD 1.54 billion) for 2018, compared with a pre-tax profit of 2.9 billion ringgit the year before. Mahathir, 93 and in his second stint as premier, is seeking to reduce a mammoth national debt inherited from the previous, corruption-plagued regime. Malaysia Airlines said in a statement it had been “working closely” with Khazanah on the next phase of its turnaround plan since September. The disappearance of Flight MH370, which was carrying 239 people, remains one of the world’s greatest aviation mysteries, and successive searches have failed to find the plane.last_img read more

Wisconsins Russell Wilson poses dual threat to Ohio State defense

Ohio State coach Luke Fickell has been preparing his team for the No. 15 ranked Wisconsin Badgers, but as of last Saturday, he wasn’t losing any sleep over it. Wisconsin lost to Michigan State on a last second, 44-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass at the end of regulation to hand the Badgers their first loss of the season, 37-31. But as the excitement unfolded, Fickell was sound asleep. “I was probably about 45 minutes to an hour into sleep by then,” Fickell said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. “I did not stay up. I’ve probably seen it five, six, seven times now. Obviously an unbelievable play. Something you work on each and every week.” Fickell may not have been excited about it, but the Badger’s loss reopens the door for OSU to make the Big Ten Championship. To make the championship game, the Buckeyes would have to win the remainder of their games and hope Penn State loses to another opponent besides the Buckeyes. The road to the conference championship begins Saturday against Wisconsin, who, until their loss against MSU, was firmly in the national championship picture. The Badgers feature a high-powered offense that averages 47.3 points per game and is ranked No. 5 in the nation. Fifth-year senior quarterback Russell Wilson leads the Badgers and is widely considered a Heisman Trophy candidate. The transfer from North Carolina State leads the team and is ranked second nationally in passer efficiency (204.9). He has thrown for 1,780 yards and 16 touchdowns with just three interceptions on the season and with three rushing touchdowns, also poses a threat on the ground. Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema said Wilson has been impressive from the moment he came to Wisconsin’s program. “He’s a stand-up guy, great character,” Bielema said on July 28 during Big Ten Media Day in Chicago, Ill. “Just a really, really neat kid. Began to evaluate, talk to him. Brought him in on his visit, had him meet with a lot of offensive players, skill and offensive linemen. Everybody after that visit was very encouraging to talk to about the way he handles himself and talks to other players.” Wilson is protected by a physically imposing offensive line that averages 322 lbs. and 6-foot-5-inches tall per player. But Fickell said OSU has to find a way to get past the line and affect Wilson. “You have to find ways to get to him,” Fickell said. “Whether it’s picking a ball off, sacking him, getting hits on him, getting guys in front of his face. There’s all different kind of ways, but most importantly you have to be able to affect the quarterback.” The Badger offense also boasts a ground game led by junior running back Montee Ball that is ranked eighth nationally with 252.1 yards per game. Ball currently leads the nation in scoring at 16.29 points per game and also averages 109.7 rushing yards per game. Fickell said the combination of Wisconsin’s running backs and large offensive line provides a tough challenge. “With them it’s always going to start up front,” Fickell said. “They’re always going to have a couple tailbacks that are very good football players. I think you’ve always noticed them up front, whether they’ve had a first-round draft pick, an Outland Trophy winner. “Obviously, they’re going to be a little bit of a running-focused team. I think you see the consistency over the years of what they’ve been. They haven’t changed a whole lot, which means they believe in what they do. They recruit to it and they do one heck of a job at coaching it.” Fickell and the Buckeyes kick off against the Badgers at 8 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio Stadium. read more

Report Conflicting reports indicating Trevor Thompsons NBA draft decision still up in

Ohio State redshirt junior center Trevor Thompson catches the ball on the block against Northwestern’s Dererk Pardon on Jan. 22 at the Schottenstein Center. Credit: Jacob Myers | Assistant Sports EditorIndianapolis Star’s prep sports writer Kyle Neddenriep reported Ohio State redshirt junior center Trevor Thompson would be declaring for the NBA Draft, but other reports are now saying the Buckeyes might still have their big man next season. Although Neddenriep first reported Thompson would leave, the Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy refuted the claim, and said Thompson’s father said the center would wait until after the season to make a decision.OSU could still play in the National Invitational Tournament if selected on Sunday.Former Ben Davis standout and Ohio State junior Trevor Thompson will declare for NBA draft, per his family.— Kyle Neddenriep (@KyleNeddenriep) March 11, 2017Despite the disappointing season for the OSU men’s basketball team had in 2016-17, one of the lone standouts was Thompson. He redshirted his first season in Columbus after transferring from Virginia Tech after his freshman season. In his redshirt sophomore year with the Scarlet and Gray in 2015-16, Thompson averaged just 6.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. This season, Thompson improved to 10.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest, becoming one of the premier centers in the Big Ten.Thompson registered 10 double-doubles and grabbed at least 15 rebounds on four occasions. After last season, Thompson took advantage of a new NCAA rule that allowed draft-eligible players to declare for the draft, but withdraw at any point and retain college eligibility, so long as the player didn’t hire an agent.OSU has two other centers on the roster in freshman Micah Potter and redshirt sophomore Dave Bell, but it’s likely that 2017 incoming freshman Kaleb Wesson will immediately replace Thompson should he not return to OSU.The Lantern is working to independently confirm.Editor’s Note: This article has been updated with conflicting reports. It was initially reported that Thompson had declared for the NBA draft. read more

He shared his gratitude towards his players and had some choice words on Paulo Dybala. The fact that he was not called upon for the next Argentina friendlies has been a huge upset for everybody in Juve and mostly for Dybala himself, as he has been in an extraordinary shape lately and there is no obvious reason for the national coach to snub him.Franck Ribery, FiorentinaFiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.“Not being called up by Argentina [for friendlies] should motivate him even more because he’s still got every opportunity of earning a place at the World Cup,” Allegri shared, according to ESPN.“He’s got to be focused on this end of the season and we have all got to be ambitious when we face the best, like Real, as we search for a seventh straight title, which would be an achievement that would be hard for any other club to match.”last_img read more
