All the cool new gadgets at CES 2019 Urban landscaping gets smart. Chris Monroe/CNET A windowless Las Vegas ballroom is perhaps the last place you might expect to find upon a leafy bower. But that’s exactly what happened to me at CES 2019 on Sunday. The green and pleasant oasis I encountered amid a sea of plastic and metal electronics was a downsized version of French startup Urban Canopee’s vision for making our cities greener — both in color and in terms of environmental impact. With the threat of climate change and global warming becoming increasingly urgent, more solutions are needed to help reduce temperatures and improve air quality. Trees and plants can help with both of these things, as well assisting with restoring urban biodiversity and improving quality of life. And as our cities become smarter and more connected thanks to the deployment of sensors and 5G, there are even more opportunities to ensure plants and trees are playing their role in the best and most efficient way.Any city dweller knows how dearly-appreciated green spaces in urban environments are, but it’s not always convenient or possible to plant trees in city streets. Urban Canopee wants instead to retrofit cities with plants by growing them over the roofs of buildings or other spaces.Canopies of climbing plants are grown over lightweight, adaptable and flexible frames, which either stand alone or can be placed together in modules to allow the plants to weave together to form a leafy ceiling. Sensors within the frames and the plant pots allow the hydration levels of the plants and the temperature under the canopy to monitored remotely via an app. A solar kit and an intelligent, connected irrigation system operate autonomously to water the plants.Urban Canopee currently has a test project underway in the French city of Toulouse, and two patents pending for the technology. The long-term goal is to make cities more resilient against climate change as well as allowing them to meet new green regulations and support the wider fight against climate change. 85 Photos CES Products CES 2019: Every story so far: See all of CNET’s coverage of the year’s biggest tech show. Moudud AhmedBNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Friday termed the proposed national budget for 2018-19 fiscal year a ‘big blue empty balloon’ which is formulated keeping the next general election in mind, news agency UNB reports.”It’s a big beautiful blue balloon which is totally empty,” the Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader said while speaking at a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Youth Forum at the National Press Club.Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, said the budget will not help ensure people’s welfare as it was made only considering the next general election.Describing the government as ‘unelected, corrupt and incompetent’, he said it will not be able to implement such a big budget. The BNP leader also said inequality will widen in the country by this budget.Moudud said there is no directive in the budget to change the fate of 3o million unemployed people and the ultra poor.Meanwhile, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi termed the budget an ‘anti-people’ one.Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he said there is nothing in the budget except fraudulence and a scope for ruling party men to make their pockets heavier ahead of the next general election. “BNP is fully turning down the budget,” said Rizvi. He feared that the middle class will be put in trouble while the prices of all essential will go up if this budget is passed.
Expressing its resentment at the role of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the High Court on Wednesday said the state agency is not performing the duties bestowed upon it as per the law, reports UNB.”We’re saddened that the commission hasn’t moved the higher court for a single time although its orders were repeatedly violated,” the bench of justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and justice Rajik-Al-Jalil said while hearing a writ petition over the torture of domestic help Khadija in Mirpur. The court said the NHRC only files reports whereas human rights are violated. “This is not its job. The commission might move the High Court if its orders are not implemented. But they haven’t come to the High Court till today. This is a serious violation of the law. We’re very shocked that the human rights commission is not performing its duties.”It said issuing orders one after another without taking any effective step over the torture of the domestic help manifests human rights commission’s irresponsibility. On 9 January last, the High Court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why the failure of the NHRC to provide appropriate remedy for incidents of human rights violations should not be declared illegal. The court had also directed the home secretary to submit a report within 30 days explaining why no action was taken about the torture of domestic help Khadija on 9 December 2013.Children Charity Foundation sent a letter to the NHRC to take necessary legal steps against the torture on Khadija.During investigation, the NHRC found that the domestic help was tortured after being confined to her employer’s house and she was made to starve. However, police hid all the information and did not record any case in this regard.Later in 2014, the National Human Rights Commission sent a letter to the home secretary to take action in this regard after investigating the allegation brought against police.Although it wrote 18 times till 2018, no action was taken till the date, Halim said, adding that although the NHRC can identify the cases of human rights violations, it cannot provide any remedy to this end.

Confidence is the key to making successful and creative leaders which may directly translate into good performance by their subordinates, says a study that examined productive teams at modern workplaces.“When leaders feel confident that they can produce creative outcomes, their subordinates become more creative. It’s that simple,” said study author Dina Krasikova from University of Texas at San Antonio. Usually, creative leaders have the proper experience to fuel their ideas. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’As a result, they’re more confident. Also, leaders become more confident in their creativity when it is recognised by the senior management. But what surprised Krasikova is that a leader’s creativity and confidence is contagious.“A factor in this is the power of positive thinking,” said Krasikova, an expert in leadership, in a paper published in the journal Organisational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes. “Leaders can imbue their subordinates with confidence and creativity just by setting an example themselves,” she added. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixThe study also found that ineffective or abusive leaders create stressful situations for their employees by humiliating them in front of others, playing favourites or not giving their subordinates proper credit for their work.“When you feel stressed, you feel helpless and your productivity and creativity is diminished,” the researcher said. “Many times this originates with the leader. For example, you might come to work unsure of what you’re supposed to be doing because you get conflicting expectations from your direct supervisor or your boss. The solution is clear roles and communication,” she added.Interpersonal relationships between leaders and subordinates, too, play an important role in the team’s performance. “When a confident, creative leader also has good relationship with subordinates, it has even a stronger impact on subordinates’ creativity,” Krasikova said.
All hail the queen of drama, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, as she arrives in the Capital for the first time to take us on a roller-coaster ride that is her life. ‘Drama Queen’ – an honest biographical play – based on her book of the same name – will make you laugh, cry and look at the modern Indian woman in a whole new light with all her vulnerabilities and strengths. After a decade long hiatus, Suchitra says that as her daughter is all grown-up now, she has decided to get more active. “Being a single mother is extremely demanding on your time as you don’t have the liberty of just taking off to somewhere. So, I made a choice of staying at home and look over my newborn daughter. And now that she can take care of herself, I decided to get back to being more active,” said the actor with an impressive filmography. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfDirected by Inaayat Ali Sami and presented by AGP world, the play on October 6 at the India Habitat Centre, will show her in a never seen before avatar for the first time, as we witness the drama queen, looking for the perfect life partner. “It is almost impossible to enact the whole book, so, for the play, I chose the part where I go around proposing marriage to my friends, how my family reacts to it and the events that unfold due to those incidents.” Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveSuchitra shares, “In the book, you won’t know where the fact ends and fiction starts; my life is much vast than that. The play and the book are all about how things unfold in my life – in a highly dramatised manner. I did take some vulnerable moments of my life for the performance and tried to play the character with a lot of humour and fun.” In her candid, wacky, madcap biography, Suchitra takes us on a hormone-driven period of her life five years post-divorce with actor-director Shekhar Kapur; fame and everything that a good girl from a ‘decent’ Indian family would want. But who is a ‘good girl’ from a ‘decent’ family? “In my book, I was talking about the kind of society that we live in; a society with a typical middle-class environment. A girl has to adhere by so many do’s and don’ts; you are not supposed to talk or dress in a certain way; don’t date men, and be confined to what the family wants from you. I think that pressure is too much and in my own way, I was trying to break out of that and say, that I am as much of a good girl even if I don’t adhere to it. Parental and family pressure, society rules, and log kya kahenge is something we are all trapped in to a certain extent and I never understood the hypocrisy or brushing things under the carpet. I have never understood why people in India don’t talk about sex or going to a shrink. These things should be very normal,” said the unabashed actor, writer and singer. Suchitra has never shied away from calling a spade a spade even if it dismays the society and that’s what one can expect from her play. “I think society is very afraid of women’s sexuality, and their freedom. And that’s something which comes from patriarchy. It is a patriarchy that has trickled down even to women in the way they are conditioned. I frankly don’t take much heed towards what people say about me, how they judge me or how they see me. I think everyone should concentrate all their energy on their own life and try to make their own life better.”Suchitra has seen the industry up-close and said a big no to a favour in exchange for sex. She says that if an adult woman has consensual sex with a man 10 times then she cannot cry rape, as we see this happening nowadays. “I think it is a pure exploitation of the law and a lot of women are misusing the law. There is something very convoluted and opportunistic about that. Yes, women should be protected but women can also use the law wrongly and I think that’s happening in many instances. Women should also have the guts to have sex for the sake of sex or advancement, and not play helpless victims when things go wrong.” A single mother, stuck in the quagmire of her strict middle-class moral upbringing, Suchitra hurtles, chugs and somersaults on a rollercoaster journey in a desperate bid to find security and true love. This play will teach you ‘the freedom to be’ or as Suchitra says, “It is perfectly okay to be vulnerable, to make mistakes, to express yourself and it’s okay to be yourself.”
There are seemingly an infinite number of mobile games in app stores these days. So much so that finding good games is often a struggle for consumers. While ranking charts and app store recommendations help, it’s easy to create a game and have it get lost in the sea of options before getting a single user. Some game developers have hacked the process and established suites of successful titles, while others have created one-off hits. Whatever the method, achieving success in gaming will depend on how the market develops in the coming year.Related: Infographic: The Gaming IndustryMarket research found that there are more than180 million mobile gamers in the U.S. as of 2016, and that number is projected to grow by at least another 12 million in 2017. With so many gamers, the opportunity to grow gaming franchises is significant. There are also countless opportunities to leverage the popularity of mobile gaming for marketing efforts, brand development and educational interests.Data shows that market penetration for mobile gaming is only at 55 percent, which means there are plenty of opportunities for developers and gaming companies to reach new consumer segments with successfully targeted games. There are a few proven strategies that have been successfully implemented by established gaming companies.“The app stores have changed significantly over the years and are now more competitive than ever before,” says Ilya Nikolayev, founder and CEO of Tapinator (TAPM), a mobile gaming company. “To control your own destiny, your game’s metrics need to be good enough to allow you to profitably acquire users for your title.” That is the goal of any gaming developer — to create titles that support long term growth. The following strategies will help any company in the mobile gaming space grow in 2017.1. Quantitative approach before creative.Games are a creative and recreational outlet for most players. Most people play for a chance to suspend reality and enjoy experiences they would not otherwise have time for. Many game companies start the development process with a creative approach in mind. If they want to create games that generate value, however, they would do better to start with a quantitative approach.Related: Has the Mobile Gaming Frenzy Caught in India Yet? This Entrepreneur Says Yes.The challenge is assessing whether or not the investment in development will result in the expected financial outcomes. Nikolayev explains how to engage with this problem. “This is a quantity-driven business where each engine allows us to quickly release new titles while minimizing additional development work for each game,” he says. “The main challenge here is building an install base for each game that is sufficiently large so as to monetize the product via advertising.”2. Create fast, iterate often.Another way to accelerate growth is by developing games quickly and making constant improvements. Nikolayev says that Tapinator has worked to develop two key categories of games — full-features and rapid-launch. Full-feature games are titles that keep people engaged with longer form content, while rapid-launch games tend to entice users by capitalizing on current trends. With the ability to make upgrades and additions over time, developers can deliver a simple gaming experience and improve it with time. This is not to say that you should develop a substandard game and improve it as you go. Everything has to start at a high quality. Otherwise, you risk upsetting users. Developing methods for creating games fast, however, helps maintain your competitive advantage.3. Create an ecosystem of apps for marketing. While some games start as singular successes, it is much more common for games to succeed as a part of a larger collection or franchise. Examples like PokemonGo are a rarity, and it is important to note that most one-off hits come from existing entertainment franchises. To ensure the success of a game, it is best to develop and release a series of similar titles under the same developer. In doing so, anytime a player enjoys one of your games, there is another waiting for them to try.“For rapid-launch games, the calculation is much simpler,” Nikolayev says. “We do not utilize paid marketing here and rely exclusively on our own cross-promotion network.” Brands looking to expand offerings in 2017 would benefit from a similar strategy.Related: This Entrepreneur Quit His Job to Start a Company — Any Company — After He Held an iPhone for the First Time. Now His Weight Loss App Has 30 Million Users.Whether you are a developer, marketer, gaming entrepreneur or something in between, these strategies will help you launch more successful brands in 2017. Focus on your audience, their unique needs and what kind of games will keep them engaged. Develop games with their revenue potential in mind, and you are more likely to create sustainable titles that deliver value in the long term. Always consider to how your existing users can inform the development process to ensure future games are just as successful. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
