It Chapter 2 trailer a bloody scary way to start ComicCon

first_img 0 It Chapter 2 is the second part of 2017’s blockbuster movie It based on Stephen King’s 1986 best-seller. “[The film is] still about that friendship those kids in chapter one developed and how they really became each other’s best friends to fight this evil,” Mustafa told CNET. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s horrifying, but it’s still touching.” postercropped Warner Bros. A new poster also hit Wednesday, showing a pair of ominous yellow clown eyes staring out from a face covered in white makeup. Those crimson-red slashes definitely can’t mean anything good. Chastain has said the film features one of the bloodiest scenes of any horror film, ever.  62 Photos Rick and Morty Comic-Con exclusive toy unboxing It Chapter 2 opens on Sept. 5 in Australia and on Sept. 6 in the US and UK.   6:21 Share your voice Originally published July 18, 1:42 a.m. PT. Update, 9:22 a.m. PT: Adds link to new trailer that just appeared online.  The new trailer for It Chapter 2 debuted to audiences at Comic-Con a day before it posted online. New Line Cinema Pennywise the evil clown is back, and creepy as ever. A trailer for It Chapter 2 debuted Wednesday night at San Diego Comic-Con ahead of its debut online Thursday, and if murderous clowns make you nervous, this footage won’t do anything to ease your terror. The It Chapter 2 trailer quickly reveals that 27 years after the first movie, most of the members of the Losers’ Club have somehow forgotten their horrific experiences after moving out of Derry, Maine, as adults.”Something happens to you when you leave this town,” Mike (Isaiah Mustafa) says. But since he didn’t leave, he remembers everything. The final clip appears to take place later in the film, and as such I won’t be revealing much about it. The Losers return to the old house seen at the end of the 2017 It film. Muschietti told the audience before airing the clip that the house is only visible to children, and apparently the Losers’ Club. This sequence leads to a horrifying reveal. We also see sewers and lots of red balloons, which Pennywise clutches while flying through the air. We also see the reappearance of Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott) who is seen telling Beverly, “I died.”In addition to dealing with creepy kids, Beverly will also be covered in fake blood for at least a part of the film. So much blood Chastain said that she was thrilled to learn about the sequence from director Andy Muschietti. “Let’s make Carrie on steroids,” was her reaction, she told the audience at the Warner Bros. ScareDiego event where the trailer and three clips were shown. Tags The very best cosplay we saw at Comic-Con 2019 Audiences were shown three clips from It Chapter 2, which I’ll only lightly describe to avoid getting too into spoilers. The first two expand on sequences seen in the trailer. The first of the clips showed the reunion of the Losers’ Club as adults. It’s clear many of the friends haven’t stayed in close touch, zinging each other over who may or may not have gotten married. As the sequence continues, each character begins to remember their childhood, including the horrors of Pennywise. The second clip shows Bill running through a carnival in search of an unnamed child who is apparently being hunted by It.  Post a comment TV and Movies 2:28 More It Chapter 2last_img read more

Sea level rise prior to 1990 found to be slower than other

first_img Since approximately 1990, it has been relatively easy to measure sea level height across the planet because of advances in satellite technology. Prior to that time, as the researchers note, it was much more difficult due to a variety of factors such as gravity, land rising and sinking, wind patterns, etc., using tide gauges placed at sites around the world. In this new effort, the researchers have attempted to gain a better understanding of sea level changes during the 20th century prior to the use of satellite technology. To create a better record, the researchers collected tide data and combined it with factors that are known to have caused changes in sea levels, such as shifts in land masses, regional events such as weather changes and, of course, runoff due to melting of glaciers and northern ice. They used all the data they had collected to create a model depicting sea levels in various parts of the world over the past 100 years, and then used the model to calculate the rate at which sea levels were rising on average over the same time frame. As expected, the model showed a rate of 3.1 millimeters per year since 1990, which agrees with satellite reports. But the model also showed that before 1990, the average rate was just 1.1 millimeter a year, which is significantly less than other models have shown. These numbers suggest that sea levels have been rising much faster since 1990 than other models have shown, in some cases up to three time faster. The accelerated rise is believed to be due to more runoff from mountain glaciers, expansion of ocean waters due to warmer water temperatures, and melting of ice in the northern and southern parts of the planet—all due to global warming. (Phys.org)—A team of researchers from across Europe has found evidence that suggests the rate of rise in sea levels from approximately 1902 until 1990 was less than other models have shown. This indicates, the team reports in their paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, that modern sea levels are rising faster than suspected. © 2017 Phys.org Journal information: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Explore further More information: Sönke Dangendorf et al. Reassessment of 20th century global mean sea level rise, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2017). DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1616007114AbstractThe rate at which global mean sea level (GMSL) rose during the 20th century is uncertain, with little consensus between various reconstructions that indicate rates of rise ranging from 1.3 to 2 mm⋅y−1. Here we present a 20th-century GMSL reconstruction computed using an area-weighting technique for averaging tide gauge records that both incorporates up-to-date observations of vertical land motion (VLM) and corrections for local geoid changes resulting from ice melting and terrestrial freshwater storage and allows for the identification of possible differences compared with earlier attempts. Our reconstructed GMSL trend of 1.1 ± 0.3 mm⋅y−1 (1σ) before 1990 falls below previous estimates, whereas our estimate of 3.1 ± 1.4 mm⋅y−1 from 1993 to 2012 is consistent with independent estimates from satellite altimetry, leading to overall acceleration larger than previously suggested. This feature is geographically dominated by the Indian Ocean–Southern Pacific region, marking a transition from lower-than-average rates before 1990 toward unprecedented high rates in recent decades. We demonstrate that VLM corrections, area weighting, and our use of a common reference datum for tide gauges may explain the lower rates compared with earlier GMSL estimates in approximately equal proportion. The trends and multidecadal variability of our GMSL curve also compare well to the sum of individual contributions obtained from historical outputs of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5. This, in turn, increases our confidence in process-based projections presented in the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.center_img Citation: Sea level rise prior to 1990 found to be slower than other estimates suggesting modern rise significantly faster (2017, May 23) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2017-05-sea-prior-slower-modern-significantly.html Researchers model differences in East Coast sea level rise Credit: CC0 Public Domain This document is subject to copyright. 3 Growth Strategies for Mobile Gaming

first_img There are seemingly an infinite number of mobile games in app stores these days. So much so that finding good games is often a struggle for consumers. While ranking charts and app store recommendations help, it’s easy to create a game and have it get lost in the sea of options before getting a single user. Some game developers have hacked the process and established suites of successful titles, while others have created one-off hits. Whatever the method, achieving success in gaming will depend on how the market develops in the coming year.Related: Infographic: The Gaming IndustryMarket research found that there are more than180 million mobile gamers in the U.S. as of 2016, and that number is projected to grow by at least another 12 million in 2017. With so many gamers, the opportunity to grow gaming franchises is significant. There are also countless opportunities to leverage the popularity of mobile gaming for marketing efforts, brand development and educational interests.Data shows that market penetration for mobile gaming is only at 55 percent, which means there are plenty of opportunities for developers and gaming companies to reach new consumer segments with successfully targeted games. There are a few proven strategies that have been successfully implemented by established gaming companies.“The app stores have changed significantly over the years and are now more competitive than ever before,” says Ilya Nikolayev, founder and CEO of Tapinator (TAPM), a mobile gaming company. “To control your own destiny, your game’s metrics need to be good enough to allow you to profitably acquire users for your title.” That is the goal of any gaming developer — to create titles that support long term growth. The following strategies will help any company in the mobile gaming space grow in 2017.1. Quantitative approach before creative.Games are a creative and recreational outlet for most players. Most people play for a chance to suspend reality and enjoy experiences they would not otherwise have time for. Many game companies start the development process with a creative approach in mind. If they want to create games that generate value, however, they would do better to start with a quantitative approach.Related: Has the Mobile Gaming Frenzy Caught in India Yet? This Entrepreneur Says Yes.The challenge is assessing whether or not the investment in development will result in the expected financial outcomes. Nikolayev explains how to engage with this problem. “This is a quantity-driven business where each engine allows us to quickly release new titles while minimizing additional development work for each game,” he says. “The main challenge here is building an install base for each game that is sufficiently large so as to monetize the product via advertising.”2. Create fast, iterate often.Another way to accelerate growth is by developing games quickly and making constant improvements. Nikolayev says that Tapinator has worked to develop two key categories of games — full-features and rapid-launch. Full-feature games are titles that keep people engaged with longer form content, while rapid-launch games tend to entice users by capitalizing on current trends. With the ability to make upgrades and additions over time, developers can deliver a simple gaming experience and improve it with time. This is not to say that you should develop a substandard game and improve it as you go. Everything has to start at a high quality. Otherwise, you risk upsetting users. Developing methods for creating games fast, however, helps maintain your competitive advantage.3. Create an ecosystem of apps for marketing. While some games start as singular successes, it is much more common for games to succeed as a part of a larger collection or franchise. Examples like PokemonGo are a rarity, and it is important to note that most one-off hits come from existing entertainment franchises. To ensure the success of a game, it is best to develop and release a series of similar titles under the same developer. In doing so, anytime a player enjoys one of your games, there is another waiting for them to try.“For rapid-launch games, the calculation is much simpler,” Nikolayev says. “We do not utilize paid marketing here and rely exclusively on our own cross-promotion network.” Brands looking to expand offerings in 2017 would benefit from a similar strategy.Related: This Entrepreneur Quit His Job to Start a Company — Any Company — After He Held an iPhone for the First Time. Now His Weight Loss App Has 30 Million Users.Whether you are a developer, marketer, gaming entrepreneur or something in between, these strategies will help you launch more successful brands in 2017. Focus on your audience, their unique needs and what kind of games will keep them engaged. Develop games with their revenue potential in mind, and you are more likely to create sustainable titles that deliver value in the long term. Always consider to how your existing users can inform the development process to ensure future games are just as successful. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Facebook Apple Spotify pull Alex Jones content

first_imgSocial media platforms have come under considerable criticism for allowing controversial media outlets for as long as ‘fake news’ has been in the public lexicon. But over the past week, major actions against Alex Jones’ content channels suggests that things might be changing. Apple has pulled 5 out of Jones 6 podcasts from iTunes (first reported by Buzzfeed News), while hours later on Monday 6 August Facebook announced it was removing four of Jones’ pages for breaching the platform’s content guidelines. Alongside Facebook’s and Apple’s actions, Spotify also made the decision to remove Jones’ content from the streaming platform and revoke his ability to publish “due to repeated violations of Spotify’s prohibited content policies” according to a Spotify spokesperson. This news comes just weeks after YouTube removed a number of Infowars videos over ‘hate speech’ and initiated a 90 day ban on Infowars broadcasting live via YouTube. Unsurprisingly, the move has come under attack from those who see the move as an example of censorship. Even people critical of Jones’ politics have come out to voice their unease: However, elsewhere, the move is viewed positively with commentators suggesting social media platforms are starting to take responsibility for the content published on their systems. One thing that can be agreed is that the situation is a little confusing at the moment. And although it’s true that it’s time for Facebook, and other platforms to take more responsibility for what they publish, there are still issues around governance and consistency that need to be worked through and resolved. Facebook’s action against Alex Jones – a recent timeline On July 27, Alex Jones was hit with a 30 day suspension by Facebook after the company removed 4 videos from its site that contravened its content guidelines. However, as numerous outlets reported at the time, this ban only effected Jones personally. His channels (like The Alex Jones Channel and Infowars) weren’t impacted. However, those pages that weren’t hit by Jones’ personal ban have now been removed by Facebook. In a post published August 6, Facebook explained: “…we removed four videos on four Facebook Pages for violating our hate speech and bullying policies. These pages were the Alex Jones Channel Page, the Alex Jones Page, the InfoWars Page and the Infowars Nightly News Page…” The post also asserts that the ban is about violation of community standards not ‘false news’. “While much of the discussion around Infowars has been related to false news, which is a serious issue that we are working to address by demoting links marked wrong by fact checkers and suggesting additional content, none of the violations that spurred today’s removals were related to this.” Apple’s action against Alex Jones Apple’s decision to remove 5 of Alex Jones podcasts is, according to Buzzfeed News, “one of the largest enforcement actions intended to curb conspiratorial news content by a technology company to date.” Like Facebook, Apple’s decision was based on the content’s “hate speech” rather than anything to do with ‘fake news’. An Apple spokesperson explained to Buzzfeed News: “Apple does not tolerate hate speech, and we have clear guidelines that creators and developers must follow to ensure we provide a safe environment for all of our users… Podcasts that violate these guidelines are removed from our directory making them no longer searchable or available for download or streaming. We believe in representing a wide range of views, so long as people are respectful to those with differing opinions.” Spotify’s action against Alex Jones’ podcasts Spotify removed all episodes of The Alex Jones Show podcast on Monday 6 August. This follows the music streaming platform pulling a number of individual episodes of Jones’ podcast at the beginning of August. This appears to be a consequence of Spotify’s new content guidelines, updated in May 2018, which prohibits “hate content.” The takeaway: there’s still considerable confusion over content What this debacle shows is that there’s confusion about how social media platforms should deal with content that it effectively publishes. Clearly, the likes of Facebook are trying to walk a tightrope that’s going to take some time to resolve. The broader question is not just do we want to police the platforms billions of people use, but how we do that as well. Arguably, social media is at the center of today’s political struggles, with many of them unsure how to manage the levels of responsibility that have landed on on their algorithms. 200 pilots conveniently call in sick forcing ailing Air Berlin to scrap

first_img Share BERLIN — Bankrupt German airline Air Berlin says its existence is threatened by an apparent wildcat strike after 200 pilots called in sick on short notice Tuesday. The ailing carrier was forced to cancel more than 100 flights including trans-Atlantic connections, causing chaos at several German airports. The airline’s chief executive, Thomas Winkelmann, accused pilots of “playing with fire” as the cancelled flights would cost the company several million euros (dollars), making it less attractive to potential buyers.“A stable operation is an essential precondition for successful negotiations,” Winkelmann said. “This is the only way we can protect as many jobs as possible.”German media reported that the airline is in a dispute with pilots about the transfer of staff to a new owner.Air Berlin declared bankruptcy last month following years of losses and the decision of its biggest shareholder, Gulf airline Etihad, to cease payments. Bids to take over Air Berlin must be submitted by Friday. Sandals promotes social groups with new booking option for agents perks for

first_imgSandals promotes social groups with new booking option for agents, perks for clients Share Posted by Thursday, January 17, 2019 Vawn Himmelsbach Tags: Montego Bay, Perks, Sandals Resorts MONTEGO BAY — Agents now have more options for booking groups — including social groups — with Sandals Resorts, thanks to a group code option, expanded meeting spaces and perks for clients. While couples-only Sandals is known for romance, the company is also promoting its properties for meetings and social groups, along with weddings.A ‘social group’ is any group that doesn’t qualify as a wedding or corporate incentive. This could range from sports (tennis, golf or scuba diving) and themed trips (culinary, wine or spa), to birthdays, reunions or groups of friends travelling together, according to Grant Lawlor, National Groups Manager with Unique Vacations (Canada), the worldwide representative of Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts.Grant Lawlor, National Groups, Sandals Resorts (Credit: Vawn Himmelsbach)And now there are two ways an agent can book a group: a contracted group, or a group code. “The traditional way in Canada is contracted groups through a tour operator,” said Lawlor. “We have a new way to book groups that’s really catching on, and it’s called a group code. Basically, it’s taking individual FIT bookings and we link them together to create a group, so there’s no commitment to a contract, no deposit down, no risk for an agent.”With group code, room blocks are not held; space and rates are not guaranteed until booked and deposited (and it’s not applicable to incentive groups). A contract guarantees the rooms are held out of inventory and the room rate is guaranteed once booked. However, if an agent wants a contract for five rooms, Sandals requires a 10% deposit (and a tour operator requires a non-refundable deposit for every room).“So there’s a risk involved,” said Lawlor. “With group code, you just book one couple today and if they think they can bring a bunch of friends we can issue a code — there’s no commitment, no money tied to it, and if they reach five rooms, the code goes into effect and it becomes a group.”While group code is a fairly new concept in Canada, it’s already popular in the U.S. “You get the same benefits without the risk, and you can book direct with us or through tour operators or a combination,” said Lawlor. “It applies to weddings too, but we see the most success with this in Canada on the social group side because our tour operators for weddings offer 90-day, no-deposit weddings, so that’s extremely popular.”With social groups, the magic numbers are five and three: a five room minimum and three-night minimum stay. The group must overlap for three nights, but some can come early or stay longer. This option can help an agent “look like a hero to their clients,” said Lawlor.Social groups receive a private complimentary group dinner, a private complimentary group cocktail reception with hor d’oeuvres, and a group portrait session (however, only meeting and incentive groups have access to private group check-in). Always included is access to a guest arrival lounge at select airports, unlimited spirits and wine, resort-wide Wi-Fi and golf at select resorts with complimentary green fees (ideal for golf groups).Social groups also qualify for Sandals’ free room offer — the sixth room is free from September to Dec. 24, and the 12th room is free from January to August.A social group can divide the savings amongst themselves, but Lawlor also suggests agents organize hosted trips. For example, an agent can approach their local golf course and team up with a golf pro to accompany participants on the trip (and the golf pro gets the complimentary room). Or, a yoga instructor or chef can promote the trip to their clientele, and once five rooms are booked, the organizer stays for free.At Sandals, up to 20% of a social group could be made up of singles (so if 10 rooms are booked, two could be singles). “There’s definitely a market out there and a lot of groups will have one or two singles, whether it’s wedding or social,” said Lawlor. For family reunions, multigenerational groups or social groups with a lot of singles (say, a girls’ getaway), a group code could be applied at Beaches Resorts.Sandals has plenty of options for booking groups, with 15 Luxury Included properties throughout the Caribbean, including Jamaica, Grenada and Barbados. Customizable meeting and function spaces range from 500 to 10,000 square feet, and assistance can be provided for on-site activities, special group functions and team-building activities. For weddings, clients receive a certain number of bells and whistles depending on how many rooms they book. But clients can now choose which concession they’d like, rather than being told which concession they qualify for, “so it’s more freedom for the bride and groom to customize their wedding,” said Lawlor. While Sandals has multiple properties in Jamaica, two have new offerings ideal for weddings and social groups.Sandals Montego Bay features a new weddings lounge with a bridal suite, newly renovated non-denominational chapel, and new beachfront swim-up honeymoon butler suites in the renovated Seagrapes building, as well as a new high-tech conference centre.Sandals Montego Bay’s Conference CentreAnd Sandals South Coast features over-the-water honeymoon butler suites on Jamaica’s lush South Coast within a 500-acre wilderness preserve. Each room and suite overlooks the two-mile beach, and the resort offers 14,000 square feet of meeting and convention space including a three-level theatre and new Latitudes over-the-water bar.Latitudes Overwater Bar, Sandals South CoastFor agents, group code can make it easier to start booking social groups and even weddings. “Some of Sandals most successful agents — our Chairman’s Royal Club members — do groups,” said Lawlor, “so it’s extremely lucrative.” << Previous PostNext Post >> About Latest Posts Vawn HimmelsbachContributor at TravelweekVawn Himmelsbach has been writing about travel for more than a decade for media outlets such as CBC.ca, Metro News, Flare, Sweet Travel, PlanetEye Traveler and Hotelier, among others.
