Premier League round-up: Bournemouth beat West Ham in seven-goal thriller

first_img1 Bournemouth’s hat-trick hero Callum Wilson celebrates Callum Wilson netted a fine hat-trick to lead Bournemouth to their first ever Premier League win, with the Cherries edging a seven-goal thriller against a ten-man West Ham.Eddie Howe’s side dominated the first-half at Upton Park and looked to be cruising to a historic three points when striker Wilson netted twice inside 30 minutes. But the hosts came roaring back after the break, with Mark Noble’s 48th minute penalty and Cheikhou Kouyate’s close-range finish in the 53rd minute pulling the Hammers level.Bournemouth, though, showed fight which will stand them in good stead this season, and they soon reclaimed the lead as Marc Pugh fired in before Wilson completed his hat-trick from the spot.Carl Jenkinson was the guilty man, the on-loan Arsenal defender conceding the penalty and earning a red card for a clumsy last-man challenge on Max Gradel, and while Modibo Maiga reduced the deficit again just three minutes later, battling Bournemouth managed to hold on to secure a 4-3 victory.Meanwhile, Sunderland halted their nightmare start to the season as Jermain Defoe’s second-half strike rescued a 1-1 draw with Swansea at the Stadium of Light.Despite the Black Cats dominating the opening exchanges, it was Swansea who broke the deadlock against the run of play, Bafetimbi Gomis netting his third goal in three games on the stroke of half-time.Sunderland fans have been raging at their side after beginning the campaign with dismal back-to-back defeats, but there were signs of fight as they pressed for the equaliser and it deservedly came on the hour mark when Defoe, played in from Jeremain Lens’ perfect through ball, coolly slotted home. Both sides had chances to snatch victory on, but Sunderland were ultimately indebted to Costel Pantilimon for their first point of the season, the goalkeeper saving fierce strikes Jonjo Shelvey and Gylfi Sigurdsson before showing lightning reflexes to claw away a late Gomis header.On-fire Leicester City continued their brilliant start to the season with a 1-1 home draw with an average-looking Tottenham, which sees the Foxes climb back to the top of the Premier League table.Supporters were forced to sit through a tame encounter at the King Power Stadium. The sides created few clear-cut chances, with Spurs taking the lead in the 81st minute through youngster Dele Alli’s first Spurs goal. But the hosts mustered an immediate response as Riyad Mahrez scored his fourth goal of the season; the Frenchman curling the ball home past Huge Lloris on 82 minutes to claim a deserved point.Elsewhere, Bakary Sako scored a late winner on his Crystal Palace debut to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Selhurst Park.In another tight encounter, Palace had a goal disallowed before finally breaking the deadlock on 71 minutes through Scott Dann’s towering header from a well-worked corner.Villa were level just six minutes later courtesy of Pape Souare’s unfortunate own goal, but the tide turned late on as a mistake from the visitors proved costly. Jordan Amavi gifted possession to Dann in a dangerous position, and he duly passed to Sako who put away his shot with aplomb to secure victory. Finally, Norwich City came from behind to seal a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to Stoke.Mame Biram Diouf headed in debutant Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick to put Stoke in front in the 13th minute, but Canaries defender Russell Martin shot through the legs of Stoke keeper Jack Butland to level the scores before half-time.last_img read more

Chelsea FC news: ‘He’s wasted two years of his career!’ Harry Redknapp feels Blues star made a mistake

first_imgLoic Remy has wasted two years of his career at Chelsea, believes his former manager Harry Redknapp. The French striker joined the Blues from Queens Park Rangers in August 2014 but has barely featured due to the form Diego Costa.Having made just 15 appearances this campaign and scored only three goals, there was a chance the player would quit Stamford Bridge in January, but a move failed to materialise. And Redknapp, who managed the player at QPR, believes has wasted some of his career by joining Chelsea.“When he left QPR I thought it was a bad move,” he told Drivetime. “He’s not got in the Chelsea team, he’s been very much a bit-part player.“He’s a goalscorer and he’s a great finisher. He needs to play somewhere because at the moment he comes on for ten minutes at the end of the game and it’s no use to the boy.“He’s wasted two years of his career.”last_img read more

Chelsea target summer deal for PSG star – but he will cost them £40million-plus

first_imgChelsea have made Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos a top transfer target this summer. The Blues have been linked with the 21-year-old for over a year but they have failed to complete a deal.Manchester United are also in pursuit of the Brazilian, but PSG have so far held firm over any approaches for the player. However, according to Sport, Chelsea have now made Marquinhos a priority this summer and are ready to spend big to land him.The Premier League champions would also be willing to offer the defender the chance to play at centre-half – rather than forcing him into one of the full-back positions as PSG have done.Marquinhos moved to the French capital for around £27m in 2013 and it is thought a bid of over £40m will be needed to lure him away from the Parc des Princes. Johnstone’s Paint Trophy 2016: Barnsley 3-2 Oxford: Tykes turn it around to win

first_img1 Barnsley came back from a goal down to defeat Oxford United 3-2 in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley.Callum O’Dowda had given The U’s a first-half lead but three goals in 23 minutes, including a Chey Dunkley own goal and strikes from Ashley Fletcher and Adam Hammill saw the Tykes turn the game around.Danny Hylton did get a second goal for Oxford but in the end it was futile as the League One side beat their League Two opponents to lift the trophy. After an even opening to the clash at Wembley, United’s Irish midfielder, O’Dowda, nodded in Alex MacDonald’s right-wing cross with 28 minutes on the clock. It could have been 2-0 not long after but Kemar Roofe’s shot was blocked by Alfie Mawson, while Barnsley rallied with chances from Sam Winnall and Hammill.Just six minutes into the second period, the Tykes got themselves on level terms as Dunkley nodded into his own net while under pressure from Winnall.Lloyd Isgrove then went close for Barnsley as they turned the screw on their opponents but it was Manchester United loanee Ashley Fletcher who got their second as he followed up an Ivan Toney effort and forced the ball home.Oxford nearly equalised immediately in a thrilling match at Wembley but Liam Sercombe’s shot was blocked by Adam Davies. That intervention allowed Barnsley – under the supervision of caretaker manager Paul Heckingbottom – to snatch a third, and it was the best of the bunch as Hammill, a product of Liverpool’s academy, curled a stunning right-foot shot beyond Benji Buchel after dancing through a couple of Oxford tackles.Danny Hylton’s header from Roofe’s excellent cross made the score 3-2 with 14 minutes remaining but the Yellows couldn’t quite give the match a final dramatic twist, as Barnsley intelligently wound the clock down at every opportunity, allowing them to win the match and lift the trophy at Wembley.
